St Mark's Nursery

With a mix of frustration and deep sadness we're having to announce the start of a consultation on whether our Nursery school can stay open, from September 2017.

The Government's huge changes to Early Years funding mean that money is being stripped from pre-school Nurseries like ours, to those which can offer two year olds  30 hours a week. We have neither the specialist facilities or staffing ratios to open our doors to two year olds. As it stands we are having to subsidise the funding shortfall in our Nursery from our primary school budget, which is neither desirable, nor sustainable.

What makes this sorry situation even sadder is that study after study shows that the kind of high-quality Nursery education we offer is proven to help children from our most disadvantaged families do better at school. Unless those families work at least 15 hours a week they won't qualify for the 30 hours free childcare from the remaining Nurseries, so we're left with a situation where the City's most in need children could be left without choices.

We urge you to respond to the council and write to your MP, to have your say!
